Cygnus X-1, the first black hole discovered, turned out to be larger than known.

A study conducted by an international research team under the direction of Professor James Miller-Jones using 6-day observations with the VLBA Telescope Array and observations obtained in 2011 with the same telescope array showed that Cygnus X-1 was farther away and significantly larger than known.

Cygnus X-1, also one of the closest black holes to earth, was discovered in 1964 when a pair of Geiger counters were placed on a sub-orbital rocket launched from New Mexico.

About the first black hole discovered, famous physicists Stephan Hawking and Kip Thorne made a scientific bet, Hawking claimed that it was not a black hole, but abandoned his decision in 1990.
