Some Microorganisms May Survive For Some Time On Mars

Black mold fungus spores may have survived on Mars for some time, according to a joint study by NASA and the German Aerospace Center.

A study of fungi and bacteria launched into the stratosphere as part of the MARSBOx project in 2019 found that mold fungus spores managed to survive.

Katharina Siems of the German Aerospace Center said the experiment in the stratosphere is of great importance for manned Mars missions, as it carries conditions similar to The Martian atmosphere.

Knowing how microorganisms survive on Mars could be the key to being able to produce food and materials, according to Katharina Siems.
